The Story Behind Vivéa: New Zealand Menopause Skincare

The Story Behind Vivéa: New Zealand Menopause Skincare

For many women, perimenopause and menopause bring unexpected changes to their skin. It was this experience, both personal and shared by other women, that inspired the creation of Vivéa Skincare, a New Zealand skincare brand developed specifically for the changing needs of skin during perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

Creating Skincare that Understands Menopausal Skin

Having experienced the menopause journey herself, Vivéa's founder Françoise recognised a gap in the skincare market.

Many women were choosing between highly clinical skincare products and natural alternatives that didn't always address the specific concerns associated with hormonal changes.

"I wished there had been skincare specifically developed for this stage of life when I was going through it myself." - Françoise

The idea behind Vivéa was to bring together the best of both approaches: carefully researched active ingredients, New Zealand botanicals and formulations that feel comfortable and luxurious to use.

Rather than approaching mature skin solely through the traditional lens of anti-ageing, Vivéa was developed around the practical needs of menopausal skin, including hydration, barrier support, nourishment and cooling comfort.

Every Ingredient Has a Purpose

One of the principles at the heart of Vivéa is that effective skincare begins with thoughtful formulation. Each ingredient is selected for the role it plays within the finished product, with consideration given to how different ingredients work together.

The range was developed by a Christchurch-based team of female cosmetic chemists led by the scientist Sigrid Vorwerk, who has over 35 years' experience in this field. The team worked through multiple formulation and testing stages to refine the products' performance, texture and sensory experience.

Françoise was closely involved throughout the development process, including product testing, packaging selection and bringing the finished range to market.

"Every ingredient and formulation was carefully considered, researched and tested to ensure it had a genuine purpose." - Françoise

What Makes Vivéa Different?

A defining feature of Vivéa is its focus on lightweight, cooling gel-cream formulations. During menopause, skin can experience dryness and sensitivity alongside episodes of heat and flushing. Finding skincare that provides moisture without feeling excessively heavy can therefore become particularly important.

Vivéa's formulations were developed with these changing needs in mind, combining hydration and skin barrier support with textures designed to feel refreshing and comfortable.

The range also draws on New Zealand's botanical heritage. One example is Totarol, a naturally occurring compound derived from the native tōtara tree. Valued for its antioxidant properties, Totarol is one of the distinctive botanical ingredients incorporated into Vivéa's formulations.

By combining carefully selected botanicals with researched skincare ingredients, the brand aims to offer a considered balance between nature, science and everyday skin comfort.

Why Simpler Skincare Can Be More Effective

The skincare industry has become increasingly complex, with new active ingredients, treatments and multi-step routines constantly being introduced. But more products don't necessarily mean better results.

For skin experiencing hormonal changes, consistency and choosing appropriate formulations can be more beneficial than continually introducing new products. This belief has shaped Vivéa's approach to skincare.

A simple daily routine can begin with the Gentle Creamy Cleanser, followed by the Cooling Day Gel Cream in the morning or Cooling Night Gel Cream in the evening.

"My approach has become much more intentional, gentle and minimalist. I focus on consistency rather than overwhelming my skin with every new industry trend." - Françoise

The Importance of The Skincare Experience

While ingredient selection and formulation performance are central to Vivéa, the experience of using the products is equally important. Texture, scent, application and the way a product feels on the skin were all considered during development.

The aim was to create skincare that women would enjoy using consistently, transforming an everyday routine into a small moment of personal care. For Françoise, this balance between science and sensory experience was an essential part of bringing Vivéa to life.

Looking Towards a More Thoughtful Future for Skincare

As consumers become more knowledgeable about ingredients and formulation, Françoise believes the future of skincare will increasingly focus on transparency, simplicity and responsible ingredient sourcing.

The long-term vision is to establish Vivéa as a trusted premium New Zealand skincare brand, recognised for its thoughtful approach to menopausal skin. But beyond the products themselves, Françoise's hope is simple: that women feel comfortable, confident and cared for in their own skin.
